Amusing Astronomy Facts

It is not always the serious side of things that can encourage us to study it deeper. Sometimes, the strange and amusing characteristics are the ones that prompt your interest first. At the beginning, you may just get a piece of information that can simply whet a little your appetite for knowledge. Soon, you realize that want more of the same until you are finally hooked to it. The same rule applies with astronomy. A trivial fact about a certain star may have started it all. However, later you begin to seek more information about the rest of the stars and planets until you become a serious astronomy buff yourself. Here are some amusing facts in astronomy that will surely encourage you to learn more about it.

Of course, you already have heard many times that the stars are countless. That is as far as your literature and Bible classes have told you. However, being material objects, stars can certainly be counted. It only takes a telescope as powerful as the Hubble in order for you to make the closest estimate. With it, you will learn that there are 175 billion galaxies in the universe. A dwarf galaxy can have 10 million stars while a giant can have a trillion. Therefore, if you want to know how many stars you can possibly see in a night, just do the basic arithmetic instead of lifting your fingers and have a headache counting them. However, you may have to update your count yearly too. It is said that the Milky Way, the galaxy in which the earth is located, can have, at most, five new stars every year.

While the number of stars is far bigger than that of earth's sand, the main star in solar system, which is the sun, 864 thousand miles. That is why its light alone can already make many other stars lose their glitter. However, there are stars even bigger than the sun. It is just that these are too far away from the earth already to be significant. You will certainly learn more about these things if you heighten your interest in astronomy. If you have astrophobia though, you may only get to learn these through books. Astrophobia is the fear of anything in the celestial system. The sight of any star may scare you.

Amusing facts in astronomy also include those that can be used to start conversations. Often, these are information that no one considered important. However, when you tell them these they may ask you for more. In order for you not to run out of similar subjects to share, you must study astronomy in the manner the experts do. Do not spend all your time reading books. Instead, bring out your telescope and gaze at the sky at night.
